Madeline Island
The shop is in La Pointe, on Madeline Island, the largest of the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. Many of the rocks we sell come from these shores.
The island
Madeline Island sits off the tip of the Bayfield Peninsula in far northern Wisconsin. In summer a ferry crosses from Bayfield in about twenty minutes. In the coldest part of winter the lake freezes and an ice road opens.
La Pointe is the island's only town, small enough to walk.
What washes up
Lake Superior's shores are known for agates, banded stones formed in ancient lava flows and carried south by glaciers. Storms and spring ice turn over fresh gravel every year.
Alongside agates, the beaches turn up basalt, jasper, and smooth beach stones. Pieces marked Beach Find in the shop were picked on Lake Superior shores.
